        "content": "<p>Special food crop project planned<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Three government institutions agreed yesterday<br>\nto carry out a pilot project on the establishment of food<br>\nreserves for emergency situations by planting food crops in<br>\nunproductive forests.<\/p>\n<p>\"We hope the program will account for 15 percent of the<br>\nnational food reserves in the next five years,\" State Minister of<br>\nFood Ibrahim Hasan said at a ceremony for the singing of a joint<br>\ndecree on the project.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim signed the decree with Minister of Forestry Djamaludin<br>\nSuryohadikusumo and Armed Forces chief General Feisal Tanjung.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim said that the program will be implemented in 10<br>\nprovinces which, based on a feasibility study prepared by the<br>\nBogor Institute of Agriculture, have unproductive forests<br>\nsuitable for the planting of food crops.<\/p>\n<p>\"In the first stage, we will begin implementing the project<br>\nnext month in 100 hectares of forested areas in each of five<br>\nprovinces: Lampung, Central and East Kalimantan, Irian Jaya and<br>\nEast Timor,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Implementation in the five other provinces -- Aceh, West<br>\nSumatra, West and South Kalimantan and Maluku -- will start<br>\nbetween 1996 and 1997, he added.<\/p>\n<p>He said the first stage was likely to cost Rp 1.25 billion<br>\n(US$549,934), which will be financed jointly by the forestry<br>\nministry, the office of the minister of food and the Armed<br>\nForces.<\/p>\n<p>Tanjung said that members of the Armed Forces will help<br>\nfarmers in surrounding areas in carrying out the project.(04)<\/p>",
