If the plan\nis realised, SpaceX President Gwyne Shotwell said the company will use a\n\u2018terrestrial network\u2019 with frequency spectrum obtained from\ntelecommunications company EchoStar, as reported by MacRumors on\nWednesday local time. Reuters first reported the story, stating that\nSpaceX intends to make Starlink a mobile service provider that will win\n\u2018a fair number\u2019 of customers from other US providers such as Verizon,\nAT&amp;T, and T-Mobile. Shotwell declined to discuss the costs involved\nin the effort and said SpaceX has \u2018great new ideas\u2019 on how to build a\nmobile service. SpaceX agreed to pay 19.6 billion US dollars\n(approximately Rp351.2 trillion) to acquire 65 MHz wireless spectrum\nlicences from EchoStar in 2025. The spectrum will allow SpaceX to expand\nStarlink\u2019s direct-to-cell satellite service to include ground-based\ninfrastructure. Commenting on SpaceX\u2019s plan, telecommunications analysts\nassessed that without a Mobile Virtual Network Operator agreement with a\nmajor carrier, it will be very difficult for Starlink to compete with\nAT&amp;T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The 65 MHz of spectrum is very small\ncompared to the holdings of the major US operators, and they are\nunlikely to lease capacity to a competitor. In relation to providing\nmobile services, SpaceX plans to launch next-generation Starlink Mobile\nsatellites in 2027. The service is promised to have performance \u2018100\ntimes better\u2019 than their current direct-to-cell offering.
