        "content": "<p>Southern Irian developed<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The focus of transportation development<br>\nis currently being shifted from the northern to the southern<br>\nregions in order to open up more isolated areas, a local official<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of the provincial office of transportation Martono said<br>\nthat the government would develop major rivers in the southern<br>\nregions so that isolated areas could be reached by boat.<\/p>\n<p>Southern areas have tremendous agricultural potential that<br>\nmust be developed to improve the welfare of the residents, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the 800 kilometer-long Digul River had great<br>\npotential to improve the mobility of the local people and promote<br>\nthe area's economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are 10 ferries serving 87 subdistrict towns<br>\nthroughout the sparsely populated Irian Jaya, Antara reported.<br>\n(pan)<\/p>",
