South Sulawesi to have two airlines<\/p>\n
Makassar, South Sulawesi: South Sulawesi is expected to
\noperate two airline companies this year in its effort to attract
\nvisitors to the province.<\/p>\n
Governor Amin Syam said here on Friday that Celebes Airlines
\nhad started operation on Thursday with a maiden fight of a Boeing
\n737-200 aircraft from Makassar to Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The airline, with a capacity of more than 100 passengers,
\nwill also serve other routes to Timika and Jayapura in Papua. It
\nwill compete with the state-owned Garuda, Pelita and Merpati
\nairlines and privately run Airfast and Cartenz airlines,\" he
\nsaid, adding that the provincial administration holds 30 percent
\nof the company's shares.<\/p>\n
Amin said that in addition, Sulawesi Airlines was owned by the
\nprovincial administration and Bugis businessmen would start its
\noperation this year to serve remote regencies in the province.<\/p>\n
\"Sulawesi Airlines will operate small-body aircraft to connect
\nthe city with Tana Toraja, Selayar, Mamuju, Malili and Masamba,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The airline businesses are expected to spur the tourism

PEKANBARU, Riau: The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) predict
\nthat the forests in the province would disappear in the coming
\nfive years unless rampant illegal logging is halted.<\/p>\n
WWF spokesman M. Onny Setiawan, said here on Friday that the
\ncondition of most forests in Riau had reached an alarming level
\nsince the relevant authorities have done nothing to control
\nrampant illegal logging.<\/p>\n
\"The forests in the province can be maintained only if the
\nillegal logging is halted, otherwise the forest will disappear by
\n2007,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Illegal logging has been rampant in Kerinci Seblat and Bukit
\nTiga Puluh National Parks, with timber supplied to sawmills and
\npulp industries in the province, causing annual floods and damage
\nto the habitat of rare animals such as Sumatran tigers, elephants
\nand rhinos.<\/p>\n
In addition, an average of 2,000 hectares of forest area has
\nbeen converted annually into plantations and farmland over the

MANADO, North Sulawesi: The authorities in Minahasa called on
\nlocals to stay alert as Mt. Lokon spewed out ash early on Friday
\nfollowing a strong eruption the day before.<\/p>\n
No casualties were reported during the eruption.<\/p>\n
Jemmy Runtuwene, a staff member of the volcanology office in
\nManado, said the local administration had also asked sand miners
\nand mount climbers not to go near the area around the mountain
\nsince it could start spewing out molten lava sometime in the
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
\"Since Thursday, the mountain spewed out hot ashes that have
\nspread in a two-kilometer area around the mountain. No people are
\npermitted to climb the mount or excavate sand from the rivers
