        "content": "<p>South Korea was placed on alert after a number of Russian military\naircraft were detected entering its air defence identification zone.\nSouth Korean authorities immediately scrambled fighter jets.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second similar incident in recent weeks. Relations\nbetween the two countries have deteriorated since South Korea joined in\nsupporting Western sanctions following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, and\nsince Moscow built closer ties with North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s Ministry of Defence said several Russian aircraft had\nentered and then left its air defence identification zone over the East\nSea, also known as the Sea of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe South Korean military detected the Russian aircraft before they\nentered the zone and deployed Air Force fighter jets to prepare for any\neventuality,\u201d the ministry said, without providing details, as reported\nby AFP news agency on Wednesday (26\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>The Russian aircraft did not violate South Korean airspace, it\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>An air defence identification zone is not sovereign airspace but a\nbuffer area in which countries require foreign aircraft to identify\nthemselves for security purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Military aircraft are generally expected to notify the relevant\ncountry before entering its zone, although there is no legal obligation\nto do so.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in late June, more than 10 Chinese and Russian military\naircraft entered South Korea\u2019s air defence identification zone.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing\u2019s Ministry of Defence said at the time that Chinese and\nRussian forces had conducted a \u201cstrategic air patrol\u201d over the Sea of\nJapan, the East China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defence said the patrol was part of a normal\nmilitary cooperation plan and was \u201cnot directed against any third\ncountry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, South Korea still lodged a protest with Beijing and Moscow\nand demanded measures to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.<\/p>",
