South Korean faces one year imprisonment<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A prosecutor at the West Jakarta District Court
\ndemanded a one-year jail sentence for a construction
\nsuperintendent.<\/p>\n
Defendant Byung Woo Lee, 38, was found guilty of neglect which
\nled to the death of three workers and the injury of five others
\non March 22 last year.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Sidik Latuconsina said the South Korean, deputy
\ngeneral manager and superintendent at PT Hanbo Bumi Karsa, was
\nresponsible for the collapse of part of the 500-ton Grogol ramp
\nand overpass in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The project's contractors were Hanbo General Contractors and
\nPT Bumi Karsa, along with Indonesian and Japanese consultants and
\nsupervisors.<\/p>\n
The defendant, Latuconsina said, \"violated articles 359 and
\n360 of the Criminal Code\" which carries a maximum sentence of
\nfive years' imprisonment.<\/p>\n
Latuconsina said Byung deserved the sentence because \"his
\ncarelessness cost lives\", he said.<\/p>\n
But he added that the defendant was polite and was not
\ndirectly involved in the incident.<\/p>\n
The sentence request in yesterday's session finally took place
\nafter being delayed 15 times.<\/p>\n
Among reasons for delays were the defendant's illness, which
\nlawyers said was a stroke and, more recently, shock. The absence
\nof a translator and the prosecutor's absence were other reasons.<\/p>\n
During yesterday's hearing, the defendant kept his head bent.
\nWhen the prosecutor finished his request, the defendant looked
\nupset and almost cried.<\/p>\n
He repeatedly massaged his forehead.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecutor, at 7:00 a.m. on March 22, workers
\nstarted to remove cross bars supporting the structure of the
\nsemi-constructed overpass. At around 8:00 a.m. part of the ramp
\nand overpass collapsed.<\/p>\n
The defendant was not the one who ordered the removal of the
\ncross bars, Latuconsina said.<\/p>\n
However, \"the fact that Byung did not know about it or who
\nordered it shows his lack of responsibility on the job,\" he said.<\/p>\n
