A powerful explosion occurred at Cimanggis Market in Ciputat, South\nTangerang, Banten, last night. Police have identified the location where\nit originated.<\/p>\n
Police investigated the incident by conducting two crime-scene\nexaminations. They reviewed 18 CCTV recordings and gathered statements\nfrom witnesses at the scene.<\/p>\n
Investigators eventually established that the explosion came from the\nmarket\u2019s banana-ripening room. Police said it was not caused by a\nbomb.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we carried out the second crime-scene examination. The\nincident happened yesterday at 18:15 WIB, and we conducted the first\nexamination then. We could not continue at night. We collected several\nCCTV recordings from different angles, including from the site itself,\nas well as the recorder,\u201d said Jakarta Metropolitan Police\u2019s Director of\nGeneral Criminal Investigation, Senior Commissioner Imron Ermawan, at\nCimanggis Market on Thursday (15 October 2026).<\/p>\n
The explosion took place on Wednesday (14 October). It killed two\npeople, injured 13 and caused severe damage to several shop-houses and\nvehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the preliminary findings of the bomb-disposal unit, which\ncarried out a sweep, no bomb-like object was found. We will, of course,\ninvestigate this further and follow up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Findings at the scene<\/strong><\/p>\n South Tangerang Police\u2019s public relations chief, First Inspector\nWahyuni, said the forensic ballistics and metallurgy team from the\nNational Police Criminal Investigation Department\u2019s forensic laboratory\nfound a 52-kilogram ethylene gas cylinder and a hose used to feed the\ngas into the ripening room, where bananas are made to ripen quickly and\nevenly.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst, we found a 52-kilogram gas cylinder. It contained ethylene\ngas. We also found a section of hose used to deliver the ethylene gas to\nthe ripening room. This is a room for ripening bananas quickly and\nevenly,\u201d said Jakaria Sembiring, head of the laboratory\u2019s forensic\nballistics and metallurgy division.<\/p>\n Investigators also found a fan motor that appeared to have broken\napart. The team is still examining it.<\/p>\n \u201cIf the motor was short-circuited or damaged, it could have caused a\nspark, so there should be signs of damage. If it is still in good\ncondition, the cause may lie elsewhere,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n He said the worst damage was in a cream-coloured shop-house in the\nmiddle of the row. The explosion\u2019s centre was in the banana-ripening\nroom.<\/p>\n \u201cToday\u2019s findings have narrowed it down further: the centre of the\nexplosion was inside a room used to ripen bananas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n 13 people injured<\/strong><\/p>\n Two people died in the explosion at Cimanggis Market. Police\nidentified one of the victims, Riko, as an employee of a fruit shop, and\nthe other, Achmad Tri Prasetyo, as a local resident.<\/p>\n \u201cOne was an operational employee of the business renting the\nshop-house, and the other was a member of the local community,\u201d Wahyuni\nsaid.<\/p>\n A further 11 people were reported injured. The victims are being\ntreated at three hospitals: South Tangerang Regional General Hospital,\nSari Asih Hospital and Fatmawati Hospital.<\/p>\n The force of the blast caused several buildings to collapse, trapping\nvictims beneath the debris.
