'Sound of Music' comes to Jakarta via Pelita Harapan<\/p>\n

Sekolah Pelita Harapan, one of Jakarta's premier private schools,
\nwill present the timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The
\nSound of Music, at Teater Tanah Airku, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah
\non Thursday, Nov. 24 through Saturday Nov. 26.<\/p>\n
Auditions for the show commenced in March, with many students
\ncompeting for the coveted main parts. The roles of Maria and
\nCaptain von Trapp were keenly sought after and were awarded to
\nSanjana Mahtani (grade 10), Kendal Metcalfe (9), Brandon
\nWirakesuma (11), and Ziggy Looho (12).<\/p>\n
The cast has been rehearsing weekly for approximately eight
\nmonths -- currently, every day -- leading up to next week's
\nperformance, under the superb direction of Coral Cady. She has
\nworked closely with Eric Bird (stage manager), Therese Wirakesuma
\n(musical director) and Donna Marriott (event coordinator).<\/p>\n
The cast will be supported by a wonderful 36-piece orchestra
\nconducted by Therese Wirakesuma.<\/p>\n
Sets and lighting will bring this classic story to life. The
\nschool has flown in three of Australia's best audio and lighting
\ndesigners to help produce the show. Costumes have been fitted and
\nthe show is now coming to life.<\/p>\n
The show promises to be a tour de force of musical theater,
\none not to be missed. The crew, cast and orchestra are all
\nexcited about the upcoming performance.<\/p>\n
Kendal Metcalfe, due to play Maria, has been moved by all the
\npreparations thus far: \"Being a part of (the production) has been
\none of my most thrilling school experiences. Not only have I
\ngained higher-quality friendships and valuable school memories
\nthat I will treasure the rest of my life; it has ultimately
\nboosted my confidence and self-esteem.\"<\/p>\n
Brandon Wirakesuma, who will play Captain von Trapp, has also
\nlearned a valuable lesson from his participation in the
\nproduction: \"Initially, I felt uncomfortable ... because it was
\nhard to draw any parallels between my life as an adolescent
\nstudent and that of a stern nationalist during the Second World
\nWar.<\/p>\n
\"As rehearsals progressed, the continuous encouragement and
\nsupport of my peers and teachers strengthened my confidence in
\nportraying the Captain. I can now see beyond the loyal soldier
\nand understand the character of a man who values integrity and
\nlove of family and country.\"<\/p>\n
