The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is seriously addressing the\nwaste problem in the capital. Following the issuance of Governor\u2019s\nInstruction No.\u00a05 of 2026 on the \u201cMovement for Sorting and Processing\nWaste at the Source\u201d, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is\nintensively conducting socialisation, education, provision of supporting\nfacilities, as well as collaboration with communities, offices, the\nbusiness world, and residents at the RT\/RW level.<\/p>\n
Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi Asikin,\nstressed that transformation is the key to success that must be pursued\nand supported by all levels of society. Integrated waste management from\nupstream to downstream is an important foundation for Jakarta to become\na global city.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnvironmental issues, particularly waste, require the cooperation of\nall parties to create broader, sustainable impacts and accelerate\nJakarta\u2019s transformation towards a cleaner and more environmentally\nfriendly city,\u201d said Dudi to Kompas.com on Tuesday (12\/5\/2026).<\/p>\n
According to him, one indicator of Jakarta\u2019s success in becoming a\ncleaner and more sustainable city is the reduction in waste generation\nsent to the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantargebang.<\/p>\n
Success is also measured by increased community participation in\nsorting waste, increased volume of waste that is recycled or processed,\nand reduced practices of indiscriminate dumping and burning of\nwaste.<\/p>\n
Conceptually, if sorting and processing run optimally, around 90\npercent of waste can be resolved at the upstream level through organic\nprocessing and recycling. Thus, only around 10 percent of waste becomes\nresidue and needs further processing at end-of-life facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf waste is already sorted from the source, the processing of\norganic and inorganic waste can be carried out more optimally. Thus, the\nwaste load sent to TPST Bantargebang can be significantly reduced\nbecause only residue enters TPST Bantargebang,\u201d explained Dudi.<\/p>\n
In the next stage, strengthening is carried out through the\noptimisation of waste banks, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Processing\nSites (TPS3R), and the RDF Plant Rorotan which processes low-value\ninorganic waste into alternative fuel.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, on the downstream side, Jakarta is accelerating the\nconstruction of Waste-to-Electricity Processing Facilities (PSEL) in\nBantargebang and Tanjungan to reduce reliance on open dumping\nsystems.<\/p>\n
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government hopes that waste management can\ntransform into a modern, integrated, and sustainable system by placing\nwaste reduction at the source as the main foundation. For this reason,\nthe government continues to encourage the creation of a community\nculture that is more environmentally conscious based on a circular\neconomy.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, the business world is also encouraged to be\nactively involved. Office areas, shopping centres, markets, hotels,\nrestaurants, and cafes are asked to handle their respective waste\nmanagement.<\/p>\n
Amid the threat of a waste emergency, some residents have taken\naction to build independent management systems from the smallest\nenvironments. One of them is Joko Sarjono, the initiator of Kampung\nEdukasi Wisata Bhinneka in RT 014 RW 006, Kebon Kosong Village,\nKemayoran, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
