Sorong provocateur arrested<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): Sorong police have arrested a man
\nfor allegedly provoking the Malamoi tribe to close down
\ngovernment and private company offices during a demonstration in
\nSorong last week.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Sorong police precinct Lt. Col. Viktor Sitorus
\nconfirmed the arrest on Tuesday and said the man, identified only
\nas MF, had instigated the closure of the offices in the tribal
\nprotest which demanded Sorong Regent John Piet Wanane resign.<\/p>\n
Sitorus said that MF had previously joined various
\ndemonstrations demanding West Papua independence.<\/p>\n
Last week's protest turned ugly when protesters began
\narbitrarily demanding the closure of various offices.<\/p>\n
The protesters demanded employees hand over keys and locked
\nthe offices after employees were forced to vacate the premises.<\/p>\n
Hengky Rumbiak, deputy chairman of the Sorong regency
\nlegislative council told The Jakarta Post by telephone on Tuesday
\nthat most government offices were now operating.<\/p>\n
\"However, several private company offices remain closed, as
\nthe Malamoi people have yet to return the keys of the offices,\"
\nHengky said.<\/p>\n
Representatives from Malamoi say they will return the keys
\nafter regent Wanane resigns.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Sorong police are also hunting for seven people who
\nallegedly ordered a 14-year-old boy to torch a Church.<\/p>\n
Viktor said that the boy, who was not identified, claimed that
\nhe had been promised Rp 100,000 if he succeeded in burning down a
\nnearby church.<\/p>\n
