        "content": "<p>Sonoco plans to boost RI operation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Sonoco, a major U.S. producer of packaging<br>\nmaterials, plans to further expand its operations in Indonesia<br>\nfollowing last year's move to take over a local packaging<br>\ncompany.<\/p>\n<p>Managing director of Sonoco Asia, Perry D. Smith, said here<br>\nyesterday the American packaging company would build new<br>\nproduction facilities as part of the expansion program.<\/p>\n<p>Smith said Indonesia was a potential market and had numerous<br>\nraw materials to support production.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1899, Sonoco is one of the world's largest<br>\nmanufacturers of packaging materials for industrial and consumer<br>\nmarkets.<\/p>\n<p>It supplies 56 percent of its products for industrial<br>\npackaging and 44 percent for consumer packaging for many of the<br>\nworld's largest companies and brand owners.<\/p>\n<p>The company is the world's leading composite can producer,<br>\nused to wrap various products and brands in Indonesia, including<br>\n\"Hottest\" snack products and \"Mesran Super\" lubricant of state-<br>\nowned oil company Pertamina.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the company acquired PT Tritunggal Sejahtera, a<br>\nlocal producer of composite cans for snack food and motor oil<br>\nthrough its Asian arm, Sonoco Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Starting Tuesday, the registered name of the Indonesian<br>\ncompany will be PT Sonoco.<\/p>\n<p>\"Since the acquisition last year, Sonoco has invested over<br>\nUS$10 million in developing the company's operations and high<br>\ntechnology in Indonesia,\" Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>He added the company planned to build a paper mill and other<br>\nplants in Indonesia in the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Sonoco's executive board chairman, Charles W. Coker, said<br>\nIndonesia was a fast growing market.<\/p>\n<p>\"We want to have plants here so that manufacturers are close<br>\nto the consumer,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sonoco booked consolidated net sales of US$2.8 billion last<br>\nyear, a 3 percent increase from $2.71 billion in 1995.
