The detention order for\nthe Member of Parliament from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party was\nissued by Colombo Chief Judge Asanga S. Bodaragama.<\/p>\n<p>Namal has consistently denied any wrongdoing in the case. As of the\ntime of publication, his lawyers have not provided a comment regarding\nthe arrest.<\/p>\n<p>The case is part of an investigation into the 2013 purchase of\naircraft from the European manufacturer Airbus, involving transactions\nworth millions of US dollars. The investigation has been reactivated,\nand an Airbus delegation is known to have travelled to Colombo in August\nto assist with the examination process.<\/p>\n<p>The matter is also linked to an international investigation into\nAirbus regarding allegations of bribery and corruption in jet sales. In\n2020, Airbus reached a settlement with authorities in France, the United\nKingdom, and the United States to resolve the matter by paying fines\ntotalling US$4 billion, or approximately Rp70.4 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Namal\u2019s arrest adds further scrutiny to the Rajapaksa family, which\nhas been one of Sri Lanka\u2019s primary political forces for many years.\nNamal is currently caught in the middle of legal proceedings as the\ngovernment and anti-corruption agencies expand their investigation into\ntransactions related to SriLankan Airlines.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, SriLankan Airlines and Airbus have yet to respond to\nrequests for comment regarding the arrest or the ongoing\ninvestigation.<\/p>",
