        "content": "<p>Some rice varieties extinct in Bengkulu<\/p>\n<p>BENGKULU (JP): Three strains of rice are no longer found in<br>\nBengkulu due to inappropriate agricultural policies imposed in<br>\nthe province during the New Order era, says an official.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy chief of the provincial agriculture office,<br>\nSyarifuddin Khalik, named the rice varieties as Kedurang, Seginim<br>\nand Talang Benih.<\/p>\n<p>He blamed the New Order government for forbidding farmers from<br>\nplanting varieties that could be harvested only twice a year.<\/p>\n<p>Local farmers last planted the rice varieties in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The government forced the farmers to plant the Pelita<br>\nvariety, which allowed farmers to harvest three times a year.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;However, annual gains from Pelita rice is no higher than from<br>\nthe three varieties, despite the extra harvest,&quot; Khalik said.  --<br>\nAntara<\/p>",
