        "content": "<p>Solving problem with cool head<\/p>\n<p>I read with a sad heart the growing rift between two brothers,<br>\nboth members of ASEAN. I am so proud of ASEAN, because this is an<br>\norganization based on brotherhood, love and understanding between<br>\nthe members and is mutually beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>Before the creation of ASEAN, Indonesia and Malaysia had a big<br>\npolitical problem which resulted in a serious confrontation. Even<br>\nthough the political problem was bigger and more serious than the<br>\nhanging of Contemplacion, the two states managed to solve this<br>\nproblem in an amicable way.<\/p>\n<p>This ASEAN grouping is supposed to be an organization created<br>\nto reach closer cooperation and to solve internal problems<br>\nthrough negotiations. We should keep a cool head.<\/p>\n<p>The latest news about the report submitted by Consul General<br>\nElizabeth Buensuceso, that Contemplacion admitted to committing<br>\nthe murders and never retracted her confession, could perhaps<br>\ncreate the right atmosphere for cooling down. I do not know how<br>\nthis report will be interpreted by the Philippine government. But<br>\none thing I hope is that after this everything can return to<br>\nnormal.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing I would like to point out is (not that other<br>\npeople do not know) that I am sure that Singapore Court had not<br>\nsentenced a Filipino lady, but a lady who ha committed a double<br>\nmurder. In this case it happened to be a Filipino. It could have<br>\nbeen a Singaporean, Malaysian or Indonesian. I am sure the same<br>\nlaw and standards would apply. I am also sure that the Singapore<br>\nCourt issued this sentence based on enough evidence and witnesses<br>\nand the result of intensive interrogation.<\/p>\n<p>Look at this case as the hanging of a guilty murderer. This is<br>\npurely a criminal case and not political. If by any chance<br>\nContemplacion was wrongly sentenced to death, then as a religious<br>\nman I sincerely believe that she will go straight to heaven.<br>\nSurely a better place than anywhere in this world.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Ali Alatas hopes that cooler heads will<br>\nprevail, and his counterpart Abdullah Ahmad Badawi from Malaysia<br>\nhopes no diplomatic break will happen and I (not that I pretend<br>\nto be on the same level as the Foreign Ministers) pray may God<br>\ngive guidance to both countries.<\/p>\n<p>SOEGIH ARTO<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
