Solution to prevent floods in Jakarta<\/p>\n

The comments by some Jakarta administration officials on
\nrecent floods in the city were extremely amusing. They said that
\nflooding was all part and parcel of the seasonal cycle. What
\nirritates me is why they never take any preventative measures to
\nanticipate this problem, which blights the city, year after year.<\/p>\n
The governor's visits to disaster sites are, in effect,
\nmeaningless gestures. Is the public continuously expected to be
\nsubmissive and accept their fate with resignation?<\/p>\n
In my opinion, Jakarta's floods are not entirely
\nuncontrollable and the following are a few suggestions to solve
\nthe annual problem, which I hope will be implemented by the city
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
1. As building permits include the prerequisite of wells or
\nareas to absorb water, related officials should monitor
\ndevelopers so that they adhere to the regulations.<\/p>\n
2. Stern measures should be taken against those polluting
\nJakarta's waterways.<\/p>\n
3. Instead of erecting new monuments, the relevant funds
\nshould be allocated for the development of dams in the southern,
\nsoutheastern and southwestern parts of the city. By channeling
\nwater courses to dams, Jakarta would become free from flooding.
\nThe dams would also be useful for breeding fish and could become
\nlocal tourist resorts. In addition, as the project would require
\na lot of manpower, it would reduce the city's rate of
\nunemployment.<\/p>\n
