Soldiers for debt collectors<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (AP): Thailand's army commander in chief will
\ninvestigate reports that a colonel and 50 military policemen were
\nhired to collect a 100 million baht ($2.1 million) debt from a
\nwealthy businessman.<\/p>\n
Gen. Chetta Thanajaro said he had appointed a panel to
\ninvestigate the incident and its findings would be submitted to
\nPrime Minister Chuan Leekpai, who is also defense minister, the
\nBangkok Post reported.<\/p>\n
The 50 military policemen were engaged in a tense, armed
\nstandoff with about 100 Bangkok police on Wednesday night at a
\nnightclub in the capital owned by the unidentified tycoon as they
\ntried to collect the debt.<\/p>\n
No one was arrested in the incident, and the reports did not
\nidentify who had hired the military police.<\/p>\n
Chetta warned army personnel when he became commander in chief
\ntwo years ago to stop moonlighting as bodyguards, nightclub
\nbouncers and enforcers for wealthy businessmen or criminal
\ngodfathers.<\/p>",
