Soldier shoots dead four comrades in Aceh<\/p>\n

A middle-ranking Navy officer shot dead four Army personnel in a
\nshooting spree and left another one critically wounded, a
\nmilitary official said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Lt. Col. Asep Sapari, a military spokesman in troubled
\nprovince Aceh Nanggroe Darussalam, said that the shooter probably
\nsuffered from depression during his military service in Aceh.<\/p>\n
The fatal shooting began at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday when several
\ndozen Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel were doing morning
\nexercises in a field in Neusu Jaya military base, Banda Aceh
\nmunicipality, the capital of Aceh province.<\/p>\n
Another version stated that the shooting spree happened at 5
\na.m.<\/p>\n
The soldiers suddenly heard gunfire coming from a dormitory in
\nthe complex of the military base and they quickly encircled the
\ndormitory.<\/p>\n
They found five people lying wounded on the floor in a corner
\nof the dormitory.<\/p>\n
Led by military police personnel, they arrested First. Lt.
\nPatrik Simorangkir, who shot dead the four Army personnel and
\nwounded another one.<\/p>\n
The four were First. Lt. Dedy, First. Sgt. Pandiangan, Chief
\nSgt. Bambang and Chief. Pvt. Suyatno. The only survivor in the
\nincident was Chief. Pvt. Wawan, who sustained a serious gunshot
\nwound.<\/p>\n
Army and the Navy personnel work together in the
\nadministrative assistance task force, a task force of the TNI
\nsecurity operations in Aceh. They have been in Aceh between seven
\nto 11 months, to join TNI military operations to quell the
\nseparatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Simorangkir himself had been
\nassigned in Aceh for 11 months, said Asep, as quoted by Antara
\nnews agency.<\/p>\n
A source at a military hospital in Banda Aceh told The Jakarta
\nPost that the shooter probably suffered from malaria that led to
\ndepression.<\/p>\n
\"We are investigating the incident,\" said Asep.<\/p>\n
The shooting spree was the second after a middle-ranking Army
\nofficer also shot dead several fellow TNI personnel and wounded
\nothers in the Timika town of Papua province in the 1990s.<\/p>\n
Malaria was also blamed for driving the officer to shoot his
\ncolleagues.<\/p>",
