Soldier elected council chief<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Burhanuddin Ali from the Armed
\nForces faction was elected chief of the provincial legislative
\ncouncil yesterday amid students protest.<\/p>\n
Burhanuddin won 37 votes while his only rival, Hasan Saleh,
\nfrom the dominant Golkar faction, received only five votes. Three
\ncouncilors were absent.<\/p>\n
The election was marred by dozens of students who staged a
\nnoisy demonstration urging Golkar councilors to elect Hasan Saleh
\nas Golkar's board of executives in Jakarta has sought.<\/p>\n
The protesters said the election of Burhanuddin was \"unfair\"
\nbecause Golkar won the May 29 election in South Sulawesi and
\ntherefore deserved the council chairmanship.<\/p>\n
The Armed Forces, which plays a dominant role in politics,
\ndoes not vote in general elections but they are granted seats in
\nlegislative councils and the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
When Hasan met with the demonstrators, he said he could
\nunderstand their frustration but assured them that Burhanuddin
\nwas elected fairly.<\/p>\n
Lakama Wiyaka, a councilor from Golkar, said in areas outside
\nJava, the legislative council chairmanship was apparently
\nreserved for the Armed Forces to assure political stability. (31)<\/p>",
