Soldier admits killing six<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: A court-martialled soldier admitted yesterday
\nto killing six unarmed East Timorese rebels but insisted that he
\nwas only following orders.<\/p>\n
First Class Private Rusdin Maubere, testified yesterday that
\nhe received a \"signal\" from First Lt. Jermias Kasse to \"finish\"
\nthe prisoners, after their colleague, First Class Private
\nCostodio Bareto was seriously injured by a rebel identified as
\nAntoni Alves, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
\"If anyone from our side gets hurt, finish the rebels,\"
\nMaubere quoted Kasse as saying.<\/p>\n
\"I brought the four prisoners who were tied up together to a
\nriver. I told them to squat and I shot them. Then I took the
\nother two to the river and I finished them off as well,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Maubere said he used 17 bullets from the total of 100 loaded
\nin his G3 weapon.<\/p>\n
Kasse in a separate trial testified that he ordered his
\nsubordinates to \"finish off\" the hostages because the situation
\nat the time was \"very emotional\" after they saw their fellow
\nsoldier injured by a rebel.<\/p>\n
\"There was no comment (from Maubere) when I said 'finish'
\nthem. He immediately took away the hostages and did so,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Both Maubere and Kasse are being tried on charges of
\ndisobeying Liquisa military Commander Tris Suryawan's order not
\nto shoot unarmed rebels during the incident which took place
