        "content": "<p>Soil disease killed 19 last year<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (Reuter): The mysterious soil disease melioidosis<br>\nkilled 19 people and infected 70 in Singapore last year, the<br>\nStraits Times newspaper said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>It said there had been little advance in efforts to find a<br>\ncure or improve diagnosis or treatment of the disease, found<br>\nmainly in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>\"Doctors do not know why people die from it despite intensive<br>\ntreatment, or how it can remain dormant for years and then become<br>\nactive suddenly,\" the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>The disease, believed to be a major killer in Thailand, is<br>\ncaused by bacteria found in wet soil and on the surface of muddy<br>\nwater. Symptoms of the disease include blood poisoning, chest<br>\ninfection and abscesses.<\/p>",
