Sofyan to lead new business council<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Businessman Sofyan Wanandi has been nominated to
\nlead the National Business Development Council, which will assist
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid with microeconomic issues, State
\nSecretary Ali Rahman confirmed on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"Yes, I heard that (Sofyan's nomination). But the names of the
\ncouncil members have not been decided,\" Ali said at a hearing
\nwith House Commission I for defense and security, foreign
\naffairs, information and legal affairs.<\/p>\n
The council, which will be soon formed, is expected to advise
\nthe President on issues related to microeconomics, while the
\nnewly established National Economic Council, which is chaired by
\nformer cabinet minister and respected economist Emil Salim, would
\nhandle macroeconomic matters, Ali said.<\/p>\n
He said Sofyan's nomination to head the planned council was
\ndiscussed during President Abdurrahman's three-day visit to
\nBeijing last week.<\/p>\n
Sofyan, known as the spokesman for the Jimbaran Group -- a
\ngroup of Indonesian tycoons of Chinese origin -- was among dozens
\nof Chinese businessmen who joined the President on his visit to
\nChina.<\/p>\n
The Gemala business group owner has been accused of misusing
\ncredit facilities totaling US$16 million, which his companies
\nobtained from state banks Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), Bank Bumi
\nDaya (BBD) and Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI).<\/p>\n
The Attorney General's Office decided last week to end a one-
\nyear-long investigation against Sofyan after announcing that
\nthere were insufficient grounds to continue with the prosecution.
