        "content": "<p>Sofia's lawyer insists on psychologist<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The defense lawyer for a woman being tried on<br>\ncharges of murdering her two small sons has repeated his demand<br>\nthat the court hear testimony from a psychologist because the<br>\ndefendant had displayed an unstable psychological condition.<\/p>\n<p>Saky Septiono, defense lawyer for Sofia Sukma Sumardi, 26,<br>\nread his defense statement yesterday. The prosecutor has asked<br>\nthe court to jail Sofia for 12 years, for allegedly murdering her<br>\ntwo sons.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge Leo Hutagalung turned down the lawyer's<br>\nrequest, saying that the defendant had no psychological problem.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the panel of judges rejected the same demand made<br>\nby the lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Saky said yesterday that his client did not show any regret<br>\nafter killing her sons, who were 21 days old and one year old.<\/p>\n<p>According to the indictment, Sofia killed them by slashing<br>\ntheir wrists and necks with a razor blade.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer said that Sofia also tried to kill herself after<br>\nshe allegedly committed the murders.<\/p>\n<p>Saky, who was appointed by the court to defend Sofia because<br>\nshe is too poor to hire a defense lawyer, said that he cannot<br>\nafford to provide his client with a psychologist.<\/p>\n<p>The judge based his rejection yesterday on the medical report<br>\nof a police psychologist, which states that Sofia is<br>\npsychologically stable.<\/p>\n<p>Saky said a psychologist could help alleviate Sofia's sentence<br>\nand stabilize her psychological condition, so that she would not<br>\ntry to commit suicide again.<\/p>\n<p>\"Sofia murdered her sons because she suffered economic<br>\ndifficulties,\" Saky said.<\/p>\n<p>He reminded the court of Sofia's earlier statement, which said<br>\nthat her husband, an ojek (motor bike taxi) driver, always got<br>\ndrunk and never gave any attention to his family.<\/p>\n<p>\"Anyone under so much pressure can not commit a sadistic<br>\nmurder unless they are mentally disturbed,\" Saky said.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, he added, there should be an expert brought in to<br>\ncheck on how serious her mental problem is.
