Soesilo's death causes deep grief for lifters<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Many Sportsmen and women felt extreme sorrow on
\nhearing the news of Soesilo Soedarman's death. He was the
\nchairman of the Indonesian Weight lifting, Power lifting and Body
\nbuilding Association.<\/p>\n
Soesilo, who was also the coordinating minister for political
\naffairs and security, died Thursday having suffered lung disease
\ncomplications for the past three weeks. He was buried at the
\nKalibata National Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta yesterday.<\/p>\n
National Sports Council officials attended yesterday's burial,
\nwhich was held after Friday prayers.<\/p>\n
The association's secretary-general, Djoko Pramono, said the
\norganization had lost its most beloved person.<\/p>\n
\"The association has lost a father who always motivated us and
\nserved us. He was very close to the lifters. His death really
\nshocked us because he died while our athletes were enjoying
\nsuccess in several international events,\" Djoko, the former
\ntraining director of the country's SEA Games contingent, was
\nquoted by Kompas as saying.<\/p>\n
The association's spokesman, Budi Santoso, said: \"Many weight
\nlifters and power lifters have got jobs thanks to Pak Soes
\n(Soesilo's nickname). Most of them worked in the tourism, post
\nand telecommunication ministry.\"<\/p>\n
Soesilo was the minister of tourism, post and
\ntelecommunication before he became the coordinating minister for
\npolitical affairs and security.<\/p>\n
With his help, the athletes did not have to worry about their
\nfutures and could concentrate on their training.<\/p>\n
Soesilo had chaired the association since 1992. He was in his
\nsecond period in charge; the term was due to end in 2000. He was
\nthe council's vice chairman from 1989 to 1995 and chaired the
\nIndonesian Shooting and Hunting association before that.<\/p>\n
Soesilo brought much glory to Indonesian lifting.<\/p>\n
Most recently female lifters Winarni and Patmawati brought
\nhome golds from the 1997 World Weight lifting Championships in
\nChiang Mai, Thailand, earlier this month.<\/p>\n
\"Unfortunately, Pak Soes could not meet them because he was
\nhospitalized,\" Budi said.<\/p>\n
The association's Lampung provincial branch chairman, Imron
\nRosadi, said that Soesilo had supported the development of
\ntalented athletes in his branch.<\/p>\n
\"We'll all miss him. His support and attention to weight
\nlifting and power lifting development was so great and inspired
\nthe athletes to create international records,\" Imron, who also
\nchairs the Pringsewu training center, told Antara.<\/p>\n
Soesilo also helped establish a long-term training program at
\nthe Pringsewu training center, Lampung, and the Gadog training
\ncenter, near Bogor, for lifters preparing for the 2000 Olympics
\nin Sydney, Australia.<\/p>\n
His position will be temporarily filled by the association's
\nexecutive chairman, Budiono Kartohadiprojo. (yan)<\/p>",
