Soemarjono failed lie detector test: Police<\/p>\n
SURABAYA (JP): Police have announced that Col. (ret)
\nSoemarjono, the main suspect in a counterfeit money case, failed
\na polygraph test he underwent on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"Soemarjono as the main suspect told flagrant lies in front of
\ninvestigators in an attempt to cover up the involvement of other
\nkey persons in this counterfeit banknote business,\" East Java
\nPolice chief of detectives Col. Suharto claimed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Suharto regretted Soemarjono's constant denials, even though
\nmost of the 13 other suspects in the case testified that the
\nretired officer was the mastermind of the production and
\ndistribution of counterfeit money totaling Rp 4.7 billion.<\/p>\n
\"With Soemarjono being tight-lipped on this case, it will be
\nhard for us to thoroughly break the fake money network,\" Suharto
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Soemarjono took a lie detector test here on Saturday during
\nfour hours of questioning. He reportedly only gave short answers
\nto investigators during the test.<\/p>\n
The result of the test was reportedly received by the Surabaya
\nPolice from the National Police Laboratory (Puslabfor) on Tuesday
\nmorning.<\/p>\n
A polygraph test is not prohibited in investigations, although
\nthe results are not admissible in a court of law.<\/p>\n
Surabaya City Police chief of detectives Maj. Edwin B.M.,
\nhowever, remarked that Soemarjono's polygraph result showed \"a
\nhigh degree of failure, reaching 85 percent\".<\/p>\n
Sources at the Surabaya detective unit said Soemarjono failed
\nin two main questions, namely on his relation with the other key
\nsuspect, Slamet Hardjo, and the transaction on the imported fake
\npaper supply allegedly carried out by a suspect named Lista.<\/p>\n
The sources said Soemarjono denied making any deals with
\nSlamet Hardjo. One deal is said to have taken place at Kafe
\nFamili, a cafe owned by Soemarjono.<\/p>\n
\"(But) we have testimonies from Adiyanto, Slamet Hardjo's
\ndriver, who overheard a conversation between his employer and
\nSoemarjono about the (fake money) deal,\" Edwin added.<\/p>\n
The dossiers on the case are expected to be handed over to the
\nSurabaya Attorney General's Office this week.<\/p>\n
It is a fall from grace for the former military police
\ncommander at the Army Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad).<\/p>\n
After being hailed a hero after steering Indonesia's badminton
\nteam to victory at the Thomas Cup championships in Kuala Lumpur
\nlast month, he was immediately named a suspect in the counterfeit
