Soemantri heads new commission<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The newly formed Constitutional Commission
\nunanimously elected on Wednesday senior constitutional law expert
\nSri Soemantri as commission chairman at their first meeting.<\/p>\n
The meeting also agreed to call a four-day break to allow
\ncommission members to prepare their schedules and subjects of
\ndiscussion during their six-month term.<\/p>\n
When resuming its work on Monday, the commission will discuss
\nhow to assess and harmonize inconsistencies in the amended
\nConstitution.<\/p>\n
Rights activist Albert Hasibuan and former legislator Ishak
\nLatuconsina were elected Soemantri's deputies.<\/p>\n
Economist Sri Adiningsih from Gadjah Mada University and
\ncommunications expert NE Fatima from Padjajaran University were
\nnamed secretary and deputy secretary respectively.<\/p>\n
One commission member, Andi Muhammad Asrun, skipped the first

JAKARTA: Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will visit
\nIndonesia from Oct. 12 through Oct. 15, aiming to boost bilateral
\nties between the two countries.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian trip, the first to be made by an Algerian
\npresident since its independence, has been arranged at the
\ninvitation of Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who
\nvisited the North African country in September last year.<\/p>\n
During his official visit, Bouteflika will hold talks with
\nMegawati on mutual steps to improve ties between the two
\ncountries and on international and regional issues, Algerian
\nAmbassador Soufiane Memouni said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The two leaders will also discuss various matters regarding
\nthe Organization of the Islamic Conference, which will hold its
\nsummit in Malaysia later this month. Both Bouteflika and Megawati
\nare scheduled to attend.<\/p>\n
The Algerian President will bring with him 40 businesspeople
\nduring his visit and will witness the signing of three
\nmemorandums of understanding on small and medium scale
\nentrepreneurship, fisheries and tourism.<\/p>\n
Trade between Indonesia and Algeria stood at US$212 million

JAKARTA: After receiving live bullets last week, General
\nElections Commission (KPU) chairman Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin said on
\nTuesday he recently heard from someone who had threatened to
\nexercise black magic on him.<\/p>\n
\"So the threats to us are not only in the form of something
\nphysical or visible, but those that are intangible,\" he told a
\ndiscussion with Forum Rektor, an alliance of rectors of private
\nand state universities across the country that will carry out
\nelection monitoring.<\/p>\n
Last week, Nazaruddin and KPU member Mulyana W. Kusumah
\nreceived a death threat when an unidentified man delivered a
\npackage of 11 live bullets to them.<\/p>\n
The police have not yet named any suspects in the case so far.

Feminist philosophy book launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: University of Indonesia lecturer Gadis Arivia
\nlaunched on Wednesday a book titled Filsafat Berperspektif
\nFeminist (Philosophy with Feminist Perspective).<\/p>\n
The launch of the book, which was based on the author's
\ndoctoral dissertation research at the university, was marked with
\na discussion featuring scholars Franz Magnis Suseno, Nurcholish
\nMadjid and Nori Andriyani.<\/p>\n
In her 335-page book, Gadis showed that so far philosophy was
\ndominated by male philosophers, some of whom, including Jean-Paul
\nSartre and Frederick Nietzsche, underestimated women.<\/p>\n
Gadis, who is also a cofounder of Jurnal Perempuan Foundation,
\nsaid that many female philosophers such as Mary Wollstonecraft
\nand Simone de Beauvoir were never taken into account.<\/p>\n
Magnis, of the Diryarkara School of Philosophy, praised the
\nbook, admitting that he had not included a female philosopher in
\nhis books.<\/p>\n
\"But in my next book on moral philosophy, I will include a
\nfemale philosopher, Iris Murdoch. But it's not because she was a
\nwoman but because of her thoughts,\" he said. --JP<\/p>",
