Soekardjo's lawyer detained<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Police picked up lawyer Satryawan Guntur Zass here
\non Thursday after he failed to respond to two previous police
\nsummonses.<\/p>\n
Zass has been representing Soekardjo Wilardjito, a former aide
\nto Sukarno who alleged that four generals intimidated the
\nfounding president into relinquishing power to Soeharto.<\/p>\n
The lawyer rejected the summonses because he reportedly did
\nnot want to be a witness in the case against his own client.
\nPolice have been questioning Soekardjo for slander.<\/p>\n
Soekardjo has insisted he saw four generals -- not three as
\nrecorded in the official historical account of the March 11, 1966
\nevent -- visit Sukarno at the Bogor Presidential Palace.<\/p>\n
He said the four generals forced Sukarno into signing a
\ndocument giving Soeharto (then minister of the Army) a carte
\nblanche to take measures to restore order following the 1965
\naborted coup attempt blamed on the outlawed Indonesian Communist
\nParty (PKI).<\/p>\n
Responding to reporters' questions on Zass' detention, Chief
\ndetective Lt. Col. Erwin Tobing said the lawyer was not \"picked
\nup\" because the police had obtained a warrant. (23)<\/p>",
