Soeharto's visit to Sarajevo<\/p>\n
President Soeharto's visit to Sarajevo is of a historic nature
\nbecause it can be foreseen that it will be remembered for a long
\ntime to come and that it will have a long-lasting and positive
\nimpact. The impact of the visit is that it will strengthen the
\ndetermination of all the parties who have been making efforts at
\nfinding a peaceful settlement in that country. Those efforts,
\nwhich have involved the United Nations and countries of Western
\nEurope, Russia, the United States and other countries, have
\nencountered chronic ups-and-downs. Therefore, new enthusiasm is
\nvery much needed.<\/p>\n
The conflict is located in Europe, but the countries that are
\ninvolved -- the former Yugoslavian states Bosnia-Herzegovina,
\nCroatia and Serbia -- are members of the Non-Aligned Movement. It
\nis natural for the Non-Aligned Movement to take an interest and
\nto feel concerned. That was the message conveyed by President
\nSoeharto as chairman of the Movement.<\/p>\n
As the President of Indonesia, whose population is
\npredominantly Moslem, feelings of sympathy and solidarity among
\nMoslems is also present in President Soeharto's mission. In this
\ndimension it is not only Indonesia's feelings of sympathy and
\nsolidarity which the President expressed in Sarajevo, but also
\nthe feelings of sympathy and solidarity of Moslems in other
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
In order to make an impact and for the results of that visit
\nto be even greater and more lasting, follow-up measures are
\nneeded. It is time that the non-western countries make a greater
\ncontribution to the finding of solutions of conflicts, the nature
\nof which makes it too tough for the western countries to solve.<\/p>\n
