Soeharto's plan on National Police welcomed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former senior police officers have warmly
\nwelcomed President Soeharto's plan for the continuation of the
\npolice force's development.<\/p>\n
\"It's an extraordinary plan that the police force should adopt
\nin an optimum and professional way,\" former National Police
\nchief, retired general Awaloedin Djamin, told The Jakarta Post
\nafter the Police Day ceremony yesterday.<\/p>\n
In his speech at the ceremony of the 50th Police anniversary,
\nPresident Soeharto said that the government would continue to
\nstrengthen the national police force in order to be able to fight
\nconventional and new-dimensional crime.<\/p>\n
According to Awaloedin the next police development program
\nwill include the raising of personnel qualifications, the
\nenhancement of personnel, the modernization and supply of
\nequipment and a significant rise in personnel welfare.<\/p>\n
\"However, the most important thing is the improvement of the
\nquality of our police personnel,\" said Awaloedin, who was the
\nIndonesian police chief for five years from 1978 until 1982 and
\nis now dean of the Police Sciences High School.<\/p>\n
\"We have to continue to find ways to boost the quality of our
\npolice, so they can really protect the people and be really
\nneeded and loved by the people,\" said Awaloedin.<\/p>\n
However, he said, \"to get a professional police force is
\neasier said than done.\"<\/p>\n
\"What's the use by having a large police force and up-to-date
\ndevices without high quality and professional personnel?\" asked
\nAwaloedin.<\/p>\n
\"The important thing is the man behind the gun, isn't it?\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Another former national police chief, retired general Kunarto,
\nsaid that the development of the police force should be followed
\nby continuous efforts to improve the force's image nationwide.<\/p>\n
\"My only hope is that all the police personnel will help to
\nimprove the police's image in people's eyes,\" said Kunarto.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment, National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo
\nWidodo said that the President's plan to continue to build a
\nstrong police force will help him realize his dream, which is to
\nhave a professional police force equipped with modern technology.<\/p>\n
\"We have pledged to improve our image by taking strict action
\nagainst undisciplined personnel,\" Dibyo said. (bsr)<\/p>",
