Soeharto's health condition improves<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former president Soeharto is recovering from
\ncomplications following an appendectomy late last month, his
\nlawyer said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Mohamad Assegaf said Soeharto was in a stable condition and
\nwas no longer suffering from the effects of the minor surgery.<\/p>\n
\"He is getting better since he underwent the appendectomy. His
\nhealth condition is stable ... it's just the same as before,\" he
\ntold The Jakarta Post by phone.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, who will turn 80 this June, was hospitalized for
\nseven days at Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta on Feb. 24 and
\nallowed to return home even though he had not fully recovered.<\/p>\n
The state-appointed team of physicians from the Cipto
\nMangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) considered that it was
\nbetter for Soeharto to be treated at home as he had been
\nsuffering \"emotional distress\" which resulted in high blood
\npressure and left him short of breath.<\/p>\n
Similarly, Assegaf said that it is better for Soeharto to
\nreceive medical treatment at his own home on Jl. Cendana in
\nCentral Jakarta, where his client feels comfortable.<\/p>\n
\"The RSCM team of doctors, in cooperation with Soeharto's team
\nof private doctors, are now providing intensive treatment,\" he
\nsaid, while adding that they checked his client's health
\ncondition on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, the defendant in a US$571 million graft case, was
\nplaced under treatment supervised and paid for by the state to
\nensure that the former ruler is fit enough to stand trial.<\/p>\n
He has been charged with amassing wealth at the expense of the
\nstate and channeling funds to his family and cronies.<\/p>\n
Last year, the South Jakarta District Court dropped the case
\nbecause it found that the defendant was too ill to stand trial.<\/p>\n
Soeharto was reported to have suffered permanent brain damage
\nas a result of three strokes he experienced after stepping down
\nfrom the presidency in the middle of 1998.<\/p>\n
Chief prosecutor Muchtar Arifin said earlier on Thursday that
\nthe RSCM physicians had carried out neurological treatment on
\nSoeharto which will soon be followed up with psychiatric
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
\"Soeharto is getting better, much better than when he left the
\n(Pertamina) hospital on March 2.<\/p>\n
\"The RSCM doctors decided to allow him to be treated at his
\nhome until the end of this month and will later evaluate whether
\nto take him to a hospital for further treatment,\" he said. (bby)<\/p>",
