Soeharto's guard briefs vendors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A bodyguard of former president Soeharto told
\nvendors operating near his residency on Jl. Cendana, Central
\nJakarta, to gather at a house in the neighborhood for a briefing
\non Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
\"You have to come right now. There is a briefing,\" he told a
\ncigarette vendor at the corner of Jl. Cendana and Jl. Tanjung.<\/p>\n
\"All vendors around here, Sir?\" the vendor asked the yellow
\nbatik-clad man.<\/p>\n
\"Yes, all,\" said the man, who drove a sedan.<\/p>\n
It was 9 a.m., and several journalists, including those from
\nJapan television NHK, were there to monitor the situation in the
\narea.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know why. It is unusual that we, vendors, are
\nsummoned,\" a cigarette vendor told Antara.<\/p>\n
There are about a dozen vendors selling cigarettes, snacks and
\ndrinks along Jl. Cendana.<\/p>\n
It was not clear what the briefing was about. But the vendor
\nsaid later that they were asked to clean the house, \"just like
\nwhat we do every Saturday.\"<\/p>\n
Journalists have been watching over Soeharto's place, on Jl.
\nCendana 8, since Thursday, as there were reports that the former
\npresident would be questioned last week by a team led by Attorney
\nGeneral Andi M. Ghalib. However, tight security prevents them
\nfrom getting close to the house. They could only monitor the
\nhouse from about a 50-meter distance. (sim)<\/p>",
