Soeharto wants Tansil captured<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday called for the
\nswift recapture of business tycoon Eddy Tansil who, allegedly
\nwith the help of insiders, escaped from prison on Saturday.<\/p>\n
In addition, Soeharto ordered Justice Minister Oetojo Oesman
\nand related authorities to publish both the original and latest
\nphotographs of the fraudulent entrepreneur.<\/p>\n
Tansil, the ethnic Chinese owner of the Golden Key Group,
\nreceived a 20-year prison sentence for defrauding Bank
\nPembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo) of $620 million in 1994. It has
\nbeen recorded as the largest fraud in Indonesian banking history.<\/p>\n
\"The President wants Eddy Tansil's latest and old photographs
\nto be published so that the public can help in his recapture,\"
\nsaid Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono, who conveyed Soeharto's
\nmessage to journalists.<\/p>\n
Officials of the Cipinang prison said that Tansil changed his
\nhairstyle, making it curly, and grew a beard. He reportedly
\nwalked out of prison accompanied by a senior warder.<\/p>\n
The sensational jailbreak occurred only a month after Oetojo
\nchecked on the Cipinang prison's security system, following press
\nreports that Tansil enjoyed special treatment.<\/p>\n
\"The President entirely entrusts the justice minister to
\nhandle the Tansil jailbreak affair,\" Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n
Oetojo -- still visibly tense since he first received news of
\nthe jailbreak on Tuesday -- said yesterday he would do
\n\"everything possible\" to quickly recapture the 42-year-old
\nfugitive.<\/p>\n
The minister declined to speculate on Tansil's whereabouts.<\/p>\n
Speculation is rife that Eddy had carefully planned his
\nescape. Besides changing his hairstyle, there was an unconfirmed
\nreport that his wife had gone to Shanghai days before his escape.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, officials at the Cipinang penitentiary tightened
\nthe security system at the prison yesterday. They refused to
\ncomment further on the incident.<\/p>\n
\"The minister has already indicated that he is responsible for
\nthis incident, so it is obvious that I should not say anything,\"
\nan officer, who requested anonymity, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Visitors to the penitentiary were being very closely
\nmonitored. Some had to wait for hours before they were allowed
\nin.<\/p>\n
\"We're only doing our job. We want to help you, so please help
\nus by understanding our difficult position,\" a prison attendant
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, police said yesterday that they already have two
\nsuspects, Dulhadi, alias Dudung and Suwarno; both are prison
\nwarders. In addition, they have also been questioning 14 people
\non the incident.<\/p>\n
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said last night
\nthat Dudung and Suwarno will be charged with helping Tansil
\nescape.<\/p>\n
Iman said Suwarno, along with Dudung's son, accompanied Tansil
\nas he left the prison in his Toyota Kijang van and headed for his
\nhome in downtown Pacenongan.<\/p>\n
Iman, however, refused to provide further details on the
\nescape route, saying that \"everything is still under
\ninvestigation\".<\/p>\n
\"Besides arresting the two suspects, we are still questioning
\nDudung's son, Indrajid, and 14 other penitentiary employees in
\nconnection with Eddy's escape,\" said Iman.<\/p>\n
Among the 14 is a prison employee who looked after Tansil in
\nhis prison cell, Iman said.<\/p>\n
According to Iman, the East Jakarta police received a request
\nfrom the prison to escort Tansil to a hospital at 8 a.m. on
\nMonday. \"But nobody turned up to take our officers and the police
\nthought the arrangement was canceled,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Separately, Director of Supervision of the Directorate of
\nImmigration, Rahardi Suroprawiro, said Indonesia's diplomatic
\nmissions abroad have been asked to keep a lookout for Tansil's
\npossible presence.<\/p>\n
\"We have just asked our immigration office in Beijing to watch
\nfor Tansil's possible arrival there,\" he said. \"We have sent
\nTansil's picture to all our branch offices throughout Indonesia,\"
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
He said immigration officers would quickly move to arrest
\nTansil as soon as the fugitive's whereabouts are known.<\/p>\n
Rahardi specifically called on all Indonesian citizens of
\nChinese descent to help his office locate Tansil.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesian citizens of Chinese descent have a strong and
\nsolid network. This can be helpful for our investigation,\" he
