Soeharto wants better business cooperation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday called for better
\ncooperation among large, medium and small businesses in a bid to
\nstrengthen the unity of the nation.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said at the opening of the workshop of the National
\nCoordinating Board of Small and Medium-scale Businesses at the
\nMerdeka Palace that to have a sound and solid economic structure,
\nthere needs to be strong medium businesses which were able to
\nsupport small businesses and cooperate with bigger ones.<\/p>\n
\"Although cooperatives, state firms and private businesses are
\nrapidly developing, their progress is not at the same pace.
\nTherefore, they have varying strengths,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that to anticipate the introduction of a free
\nmarket in the Asia-Pacific region by 2020, the country's private
\nsector must take advantage of every possible opportunity.<\/p>\n
\"To do this, small and medium businesses need high capital,
\ntechnology and skill,\" Soeharto said. \"They will be helpless if
\nthey struggle alone, but if they do it together they can become a
\nvery big force,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In a separate interview with reporters, Minister of
\nCooperatives and Small Enterprises Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya
\nstressed that Indonesia, as stipulated in the May 23, 1995,
\nderegulation package, will continue to bar direct foreign
\ninvestment in retail businesses because Indonesian small and
\nmedium-scale enterprises \"were still incapable of competing\"
\nagainst them.<\/p>\n
He said, however, that indirect involvement of foreign parties
\nin the retail business, such as in providing technical and
\nmanagement assistance, would be allowed.(pwn)<\/p>",
