Soeharto urges efficient use of natural resources<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday urged the nation to
\nuse the country's natural resources efficiently and to make
\nconservation a primary concern.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a ceremony to present the Kalpataru and Adipura
\naward to individuals and cities for their environmental work,
\nSoeharto said that giant leaps in science and technology have
\nallowed mankind to exploit nature with increasing swiftness and
\nferocity.<\/p>\n
If unrestrained, such a situation opens the door for
\nenvironmental degradation and pollution which in the end would
\nonly be detrimental to mankind, he said.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's ceremony also coincided with the international
\ncelebration of World Environment Day.<\/p>\n
He said that, when speaking of efficiency, people think in
\nterms of economics, and neglect the fact that efficiency also
\napplies to the use of natural resources.<\/p>\n
The Kalpataru is in the shape of a 41-centimeter sculpture of
\nan 18-carat gold plated tree. It was first presented in 1980.<\/p>\n
Inacio Chaves from Borawei village, East Timor, received the
\nKalpataru in honor of his pioneering activities in environmental
\npreservation. Warsono from Yogyakarta received the award in the
\ncategory of \"environmental devotee\".<\/p>\n
Two groups received a Kalpataru as environmental conservation
\ncampaigners, the Tri Kahyangan villagers from Bali and the Sumber
\nMakmur farmers group in East Java.<\/p>\n
Mambodyanto Sumaprawiro from Pabuaran village, Central Java
\nreceived a Kalpataru for floral conservation and for his efforts
\nto raise awareness of rare plant specimens.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion President Soeharto also presented the
\nAdipura award to cities considered successful in maintaining a
\nhigh standard of cleanliness.<\/p>\n
There are three types of awards: the Adipura Kencana for
\ncities that have won the award five consecutive times or five
\ntimes in six years. The regular Adipura for cleanliness and a
\nhealthy environment, and the certificate.<\/p>\n
This year judges evaluated 262 cities, 60 more than the
\nprevious year. As a result, those receiving distinctions
\nincreased to 150 from last year's 121 cities.<\/p>\n
Eighteen cities received the Adipura Kencana this year, seven
\nmore than last year.<\/p>\n
Recipients of the Adipura in the major cities increased from
\nfive to eight this year, including Jakarta, Bandung, Medan,
\nPalembang and Ujungpandang.<\/p>\n
Surakarta and Malang got the award for the big city category,
\nwhile 47 cities were awarded the Adipura in the medium cities
\ncategory.<\/p>\n
The biggest jump was in the small city category which rose
\nfrom 64 towns last year to 85 this year.<\/p>\n
The Satyalencana Wira Karya and the Satyalencana Pembangunan
\nawards were also given to those who had contributed to the
\nnation's development, particularly in the environmental field.<\/p>\n
This year seven people received the Satyalencana Wira Karya
\nwhile nine received the Satyalencana Pembangunan, including folk
\nsinger Ully Sigar Rusadi and leading campaigner of green
\nconsumerism Erna Witoelar. (mds)<\/p>",
