Soeharto unveils RI's plan to appoint consul in Zagreb<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto told visiting Croatian Prime
\nMinister Zlatko Matesa yesterday that Indonesia is considering
\nappointing an honorary consul in Zagreb.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, which recognized Croatian independence on May 16,
\n1992, does not have an official representative office in its
\ncapital of Zagreb. Representation is accredited to the Indonesian
\nEmbassy in Hungary.<\/p>\n
Croatia formally opened its embassy here in March; Zeljko
\nKirincic is its first ambassador.<\/p>\n
"We are now considering appointing an honorary consul to
\nZagreb quickly," Soeharto said in an address at the state banquet
\nheld for Matesa at the State Palace. The President did not
\nelaborate who the nominees would be.<\/p>\n
Soeharto also expressed hope that the private business sectors
\nof Indonesia and Croatia would take concrete steps to realize the
\neconomic agreements the two governments will sign this morning.<\/p>\n
"We hope the private sector will play an active role in
\nforging trade ties promoting the two countries' export
\nactivities," the President was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said Croatia and Indonesia have strong potentials in
\nboth natural and human resources which can be exploited to the
\nmaximum to strengthen relations.<\/p>\n
The President also noted the two countries were trying to
\nformulate several other bilateral agreements on trade, investment
\nand double taxation avoidance.<\/p>\n
Matesa arrived here yesterday for a state visit which will
\nconclude on March 2. His visit is not only aimed at boosting the
\ntwo countries' economic ties but also at strengthening overall
\nrelations.<\/p>\n
Matesa is accompanied by Minister of Economic Affairs Davor
\nStern, Minister of Tourism Niko Bulic and Minister of Sea
\nTransportation Zeljko Lvzavec.<\/p>\n
This morning, Matesa will conduct official talks with
\nSoeharto. Following their 90-minute parley, the two leaders will
\nwitness the signing of an agreement on economic and technical
\ncooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n
The agreement will be signed by Stern and Indonesian Minister
\nof Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas.<\/p>\n
During the state banquet, Soeharto also hailed the peace
\nagreement signed in Dayton, USA, by the Balkan states.<\/p>\n
"We believe the Dayton agreement, which was also signed by
\nCroatia, has helped create peace and stability in the Balkan
\nregion," said Soeharto who visited Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina
\nin 1995.<\/p>\n
Croatia and Bosnia are former members of Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n
Earlier yesterday, Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono pointed
\nout that Croatia could serve as a gateway for Indonesian products
\ninto Eastern Europe. (mds)<\/p>",
