Soeharto sad over Prabowo's dismissal<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former president Soeharto could not hide his
\nsadness when he heard recently that his son-in-law Lt. Gen. (ret)
\nPrabowo Subianto was dismissed from the military for involvement
\nin the abductions of political activists, sources said on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
One source said Soeharto rarely talked with Prabowo,
\nespecially since his resignation as president on May 21, despite
\nthe fact that they live on the same street, Jl. Cendana, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Prabowo's relationship with Soeharto's five other children was
\ndescribed as cool.<\/p>\n
\"Pak Harto was very sad but fully understood why his son-in-
\nlaw should leave the military,\" the reliable source said.<\/p>\n
The source said that Prabowo's friends were slowly deserting
\nhim.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, however, is facing a similar situation as fewer
\npeople visit him nowadays, the source said.<\/p>\n
Prabowo reportedly did not have many activities at home
\nbecause his only son Ragowo Hedi Prasetyo is studying in the
\nUnited States and his wife Siti Hediati Prabowo sometimes stayed
\nwith the teenager there.<\/p>\n
Prabowo was apparently eager for his son to follow in his
\ncareer in the military, so he often took him to military training
\ncamps. His son, however, showed little interest in military
\naffairs, the source said.<\/p>\n
\"The couple plans to perform umrah, the minor pilgrimage, in
\nMecca this month because they want to begin a new life in their
\nmarriage,\" said another source, who spoke on the condition of
\nanonymity.<\/p>\n
Prabowo, his wife and son Ragowo went to Mecca in November
\nlast year for the same pilgrimage, along with the entire
\nSoeharto's clan.<\/p>\n
It was not immediately clear what Prabowo's plans were for the
\nfuture. It was likely that he would help with his wife's business
\nenterprises and charities.<\/p>\n
Hediati controls the Maharani business group.<\/p>\n
However, he is still avoiding publicity, at least for now, the
\nsource said.<\/p>\n
\"He spends more time now for religious activities,\" said the
\nsource.<\/p>\n
It has also been reported that Soeharto has made a recorded
\ninterview with the TPI television station, which is owned by his
\neldest daughter Siti Hardijanti Rukmana.<\/p>\n
Soeharto has promised that the interview would be broadcast as
\nsoon as the Attorney General's Office announces the results of
\nits investigation into Soeharto's five charitable foundations.<\/p>\n
\"Bapak feels sad because many of his former trusted aides, who
\nalways praised him in the past, suddenly denounce him now,\" said
\nthe source.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Andi Muhammad Ghalib said on Tuesday that a
\npreliminary investigation found indications of misuse of the
