Soeharto rushed to hospital for appendectomy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former president Soeharto was rushed to the
\nprivately-run Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta on Saturday for
\nan appendectomy.<\/p>\n
His lawyer Juan Felix Tampubolon told reporters later in the
\nday the former ruler had recovered after the one-hour surgery
\nwhich started around 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
Soeharto is now being treated at the Very Very Important
\nPerson 603 suite room.<\/p>\n
"He is conscious, he drank some water. He is still in pain,"
\nJuan said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto was admitted to the hospital, where he previously
\nunderwent several medical check-ups, around 9:30 a.m.,
\naccompanied by his children, including Siti Hardijanti "Tutut"
\nRukmana, Bambang Trihatmodjo and Siti Hutami "Mamiek" Endang
\nAdiningsih.<\/p>\n
His eldest son Sigit Hardjojudanto was seen coming later in
\nthe afternoon.<\/p>\n
Ardhia Pramesti Rigita "Tata" Cahyani, the wife of Soeharto's
\nfugitive youngest son, Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, also visited
\nSoeharto.<\/p>\n
Juan said that seven of Soeharto's medical team also
\naccompanied him.<\/p>\n
Relatives and friends were seen visiting the former president,
\nwho will turn 80 on June 8 this year, including younger half-
\nbrother Probosutedjo and former vice president Soedharmono.<\/p>\n
Probosutedjo, the latest of Soeharto's family and cronies
\nnamed as suspects in various grafts, told journalists that his
\nhalf-brother was in a good condition and would be allowed to
\nleave the hospital in a couple of days.<\/p>\n
"We have talked and he was all right. He was still given
\nintravenous feeding. He had not broken wind so he was not allowed
\nto eat yet," he said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, a defendant in a US$571 million corruption case,
\nsuffered three strokes in 1999 after leaving the presidential
\npost in mid-1998. He is also suffering heart illness and unstable
\nblood pressure.<\/p>\n
Following a verdict issued by the Supreme Court regarding
\nSoeharto's case, an appointed team of doctors was scheduled to
\nstart observation of the defendant's medical records on Monday.<\/p>\n
In its verdict, the court ordered the state prosecutors to
\nundertake Soeharto's medical treatment at the government's
\nexpense and supervision before his trial could be reopened.<\/p>\n
Juan dismissed assumptions of a scam, given that the surgery
\ntook place just before Monday's examination.<\/p>\n
"To be honest, it's rather strange for a man of his age to
\nsuffer this illness, but we have pictures of his appendix that
\nwas taken out," he said.<\/p>\n
"The prosecutors are welcome to come down here and have a look
\nat his condition themselves. For a man on his age there is no
\npoint in him running away (from the law) or creating excuses."
