Soeharto meets with CIA chief<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto met with the American Central
\nIntelligence Agency (CIA) director, John Deutch, here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Coordinating Agency for Indonesian Intelligence
\nLt. Gen. Moetojib, who was present at the meeting, said Deutch
\nwanted to gain a better understanding of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"We can use this sort of occasion to explain Indonesia's point
\nof view on issues that other sources may have discredited us
\nfor,\" Moetojib said.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto briefed Deutch, who arrived here on
\nWednesday, on Indonesia's development policy, said Moetojib.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said that Indonesia considers political stability a
\nprerequisite for its development programs.<\/p>\n
They also discussed the need for each member of the
\nAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to maintain
\ninternal stability in order to strengthen regional stability.<\/p>\n
Indonesian officials want more of such talks so the CIA would
\nnot rely only on the foreign sources whose reports often
\nintentionally \"discredit Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n
Deutch, who arrived in Jakarta after visits to Japan and South
\nKorea, is the first CIA director to visit Indonesia for talks,
\nMoetojib said.<\/p>\n
