Soeharto inaugurates cooperative diary farm<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto inaugurated yesterday a
\ncooperative dairy farm in Bogor, some 50 kilometers south of
\nhere.<\/p>\n
He said the dairy farm complex would make it easier to
\nmonitor the quality of local farmers' dairy products because the
\nfarmers had been scattered over 21 sub-districts. All their cows
\nare now at the complex.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the construction of this dairy complex will improve
\nthe efficiency of dairy production and also the incomes of the
\ncooperative's members,\" Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
He stressed that the government had not been neglectful in
\ndeveloping agriculture in the face of industrialization.<\/p>\n
\"Developing the agricultural sector is the key to improving
\nthe people's welfare. Therefore, we must continue to develop
\nagriculture besides industry,\" the President said.<\/p>\n
A cooperative was the most appropriate institution to help
\nfarmers improve their welfare because production would be done by
\nall members for the interests of all members under the ownership
\nof all members.<\/p>\n
But Soeharto acknowledged that it was not easy to develop
\ncooperatives. It was evident that cooperatives did not have an
\nimportant role in society, compared to private or state
\nenterprises.<\/p>\n
Cooperatives had not been prepared to compete with state
\nenterprises and private entities because they lacked capital,
\ntechnology and managerial skills, he said.<\/p>\n
The government would continue to develop cooperatives so that
\nthey would grow to become independent economic institutions and
\nincrease their roles in the national economy.<\/p>\n
\"Strengthening cooperatives is our constitutional duty as we
\nbelieve that through cooperatives we can achieve people's welfare
\nand social justice for all Indonesians,\" the President said.
