Soeharto has no business activities<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto and First Lady Mrs. Tien were
\namong the first to be interviewed as the Central Bureau of
\nStatistics launched its massive economic census yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"I have no business activities. Just the two of us are living
\nhere,\" Soeharto responded to questions put by a census official
\nUmi Mandayati at his Jl. Cendana residence, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said he had servants working in the house, adding
\nthat these often returned to their respective homes.<\/p>\n
All the six children of the first family, a number of whom
\nhave become successful entrepreneurs, have moved out of their
\nparents' home.<\/p>\n
The census official was accompanied by the Central Bureau of
\nStatistics chief Soegito during his call on the Jl. Cendana
\nresidence.<\/p>\n
Soegito earlier explained that the 1996 Economic Census is
\nintended to compile data about business activities, from the
\nsmallest ones -- normally run in households -- to the larger
\nones.<\/p>\n
The census is being conducted door-to-door to ascertain the
\nexistence of small businesses, he said. \"I urge everyone to give
\nhonest replies to the questions because this data is for vital
\nfor their own benefit,\" Soegito was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
The census began yesterday and is expected to be completed by
\nJan. 31. Soegito said Vice President Try Sutrisno will also be
\nvisited by census officials.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto officially inaugurated the census on
\nThursday night by appealing to everyone, in a televised speech,
\nto support the project.<\/p>\n
\"It is very important to have statistics about our economic
\nstrength in preparing ourselves for an open global economy and
\nfree trade,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The results of the census would be used to evaluate the level
\nof production efficiency of enterprises and their export roles
\nand to map out the level of raw materials needed, Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
The 1996 economic census is the second economic survey to be
\nconducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics to date. The first
\neconomic census was held in 1986.<\/p>\n
Soegito, said earlier this week that his office would need at
\nleast Rp 200 billion (US$87.1 million) in state funds to finance
