Soeharto concerned over brawls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Concerned about recent students brawls,
\nPresident Soeharto has asked the national scouts to be more
\nactive in strengthening the morals and character of the country's
\nyounger generations.<\/p>\n
His request was conveyed to the chief of the national scout
\nassociation, Himawan Sutanto, yesterday.<\/p>\n
The recent student unrest has claimed three lives. An 18-year-
\nold technical high school student, Rachmat Hidayat, was killed in
\na brawl in East Jakarta last Friday. Another student, 13, Hery
\nHeriansyah was killed by a group of teenagers in West Jakarta on
\nthe following day, while Raimon Sitepu was killed by a group of
\nteenagers at his house in Menteng on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Speaking after meeting with the President, Himawan said that
\nSoeharto also asked the national scout head office to hold short
\ncourses on Islamic teachings.<\/p>\n
Attending such a course would help youngsters improve their
\ncharacter, he said, adding that the movement had held similar
\nstudy programs in the provinces during school holidays.<\/p>\n
Himawan said that approaches would be made to Indonesia's
\nUlema Council to ensure that the Islamic courses were suitably
