Soeharto chides ex-aides for faulting him<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former president Soeharto has lashed out at a
\nnumber of his former ministers, who, upon facing questions about
\ntheir New Order record, shunned their responsibilities and lay
\nthe blame on him.<\/p>\n
Soeharto described to Yusuf A.R., a former student activist
\nwho visited him on Saturday, how those ministers now said that
\nthe former head of state made all important policies on his own
\nduring his terms of office.<\/p>\n
After the meeting at Soeharto's residence on Jl. Cendana,
\nCentral Jakarta, Yusuf quoted Soeharto as saying: "They were not
\nmerely the former president's assistants but were also national
\nleaders who had responsibilities, too."<\/p>\n
Yusuf was jailed five times during the New Order regime for
\nhis opposition to state policies. He said he took the initiative
\nto approach Soeharto now to discuss a number of problems facing
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Former ministers and other top officials always said Soeharto
\nmade all important state policies on his own when the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office questioned them over the previous regime's
\npolicies, Yusuf said.<\/p>\n
"If at that time they were ministers they disagreed with the
\npolicies taken by Pak Harto, they should have said 'no' or
\nresign," he said.<\/p>\n
Yusuf and two other youth activists, Arief Budiman and H.
\nPrincen, were detained by the authorities in 1972 for opposing
\nthe development of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, the brainchild of
\nSoeharto's late wife, Siti Hartinah. (swe)<\/p>",
