        "content": "<p>Soeharto chides ex-aides for faulting him<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Former president Soeharto has lashed out at a<br>\nnumber of his former ministers, who, upon facing questions about<br>\ntheir New Order record, shunned their responsibilities and lay<br>\nthe blame on him.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto described to Yusuf A.R., a former student activist<br>\nwho visited him on Saturday, how those ministers now said that<br>\nthe former head of state made all important policies on his own<br>\nduring his terms of office.<\/p>\n<p>After the meeting at Soeharto&apos;s residence on Jl. Cendana,<br>\nCentral Jakarta, Yusuf quoted Soeharto as saying: &quot;They were not<br>\nmerely the former president&apos;s assistants but were also national<br>\nleaders who had responsibilities, too.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf was jailed five times during the New Order regime for<br>\nhis opposition to state policies. He said he took the initiative<br>\nto approach Soeharto now to discuss a number of problems facing<br>\nthe country.<\/p>\n<p>Former ministers and other top officials always said Soeharto<br>\nmade all important state policies on his own when the Attorney<br>\nGeneral&apos;s Office questioned them over the previous regime&apos;s<br>\npolicies, Yusuf said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If at that time they were ministers they disagreed with the<br>\npolicies taken by Pak Harto, they should have said &apos;no&apos; or<br>\nresign,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf and two other youth activists, Arief Budiman and H.<br>\nPrincen, were detained by the authorities in 1972 for opposing<br>\nthe development of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, the brainchild of<br>\nSoeharto&apos;s late wife, Siti Hartinah.
