Soeharto celebrates 84th birthday<\/p>\n
Far from the public eye, former president Soeharto celebrated his
\n84th birthday at his residence in the upmarket area of Menteng,
\nCentral Jakarta, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Appearing healthy, Soeharto received congratulations from a
\nnumber of former government officials, including former sports
\nand youth minister Abdul Gafur, and former independence fighter
\nRoeslan Abdul Gani.<\/p>\n
The former ruler wore a white long-sleeve shirt, dark pants
\nand a Muslim cap as he greeted well-wishers with a smile.<\/p>\n
Bouquets of flowers sent by companies and individuals were set
\nup near the front door of the house.<\/p>\n
A lawyer for the former president, Juan Felix Tampubolon, said
\nSoeharto remained seated while receiving his guests.<\/p>\n
Soeharto made national and international headlines when he
\nfell ill and was rushed to Pertamina Hospital in Jakarta with
\nintestinal bleeding early last month. He was discharged from the
\nhospital after two weeks.<\/p>\n
The longtime former ruler has suffered two minor strokes that
\ncaused some brain damage and impaired his ability to communicate,
\npreventing him from standing trial for alleged corruption while
\nin office.<\/p>\n
To mark Soeharto's birthday, dozens of students from the
\nUniversity of Indonesia Student Alliance rallied at the office of
\nthe Corruption Eradication Commission in Jakarta (photo above),
