Soeharto calls for more kidney specialists<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto wants kidney specialists to
\nbe accredited after a shorter period of study, saying that the
\ncountry is in dire need of more experts to help battle kidney
\nfailure and hypertension.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the opening of the national working conference of
\nthe Indonesian Kidney Foundation (Yagina) at the Bina Graha
\npresidential office, Soeharto said kidney failure and
\nhypertension need to be properly and quickly handled.<\/p>\n
He said that the existing number of specialists is far behind
\nthe people's need.<\/p>\n
\"One of the problems hampering the efforts to increase the
\nnumber of kidney specialists is the long study term. Therefore,
\nit would be advantageous if the term could be reduced without
\nreducing quality,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The President, who was accompanied by Minister of Health
\nSuyudi and Yagina chairman Soesilo Soedarman, said improvement in
\npeople's welfare and also changes in life styles had led to the
\ngrowing number of people suffering from diseases such as heart,
\nblood vessel and kidney disorders.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said good diet and exercise could also bring down the
\nnumber of people suffering from kidney problems.<\/p>\n
The country's economy could also be affected by kidney
\ndisorder and its related diseases, he said. \"These chronic
\ndiseases really reduce the sufferers' productivity.\"<\/p>\n
Soeharto praised the establishment of several institutions
\ndealing with particular diseases such as the asthma, heart and
\ncancer foundations. \"Those social and non-governmental
\norganizations are obviously very beneficial for the people's life
\nand the development of the nation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The President also suggested that Yagina initiate the
\nestablishment of a special hospital for kidney and hypertension
\nwhich would also served as an institution for research, education
\nand information on the diseases.<\/p>\n
After opening the conference, Soeharto was invited to see a
\nspecial van operated by the foundation which is equipped with
\nsophisticated machines for kidney dialysis and for destroying
\nkidney stones.<\/p>\n
The President, who is also chairman of the Dharmais
\nphilanthropic foundation, pledged to donate a car to the
\nfoundation.<\/p>\n
Soesilo, who is also Coordinating Minister of Politics and
\nSecurity, told reporters that the van would be used to serve
\nkidney patients living far away from hospitals.<\/p>\n
For destroying kidney stones, one has to spend Rp 600,000
\nwhile for dialysis, one have to pay for between Rp 150,000 and Rp
