Soeharto busy in Copenhagen<\/p>\n
COPENHAGEN (JP): President Soeharto got down to business
\nstraight away yesterday morning, after his 16-hour flight from
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Settling down at the Hotel D'Angleterre, Soeharto received a
\nprogress report from Coordinating Minister of People's Welfare
\nAzwar Anas and Minister of Social Services Inten Suweno about the
\non-going World Conference on Social Development.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian head of state has been appointed one of the
\nvice presidents of the UN summit, which opens on Saturday.
\nSoeharto, along with leaders from the Philippines, China, South
\nKorea, India and Qatar, has been selected to represent Asia.<\/p>\n
He is scheduled to address the gathering of about 130 world
\nleaders on the opening day in his capacity as the Indonesian
\nPresident as well as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement.<\/p>\n
Soeharto ordered Indonesia's top diplomats and his staff to
\nkeep him abreast of the situation in war-ravaged Bosnia-
\nHerzegovina ahead of his visit to the besieged capital of
\nSarajevo next Monday, his aides said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian leader will be conducting state affairs from
\nhis Copenhagen hotel suite for the next four days. Besides
\nattending the summit, he will also be holding meetings with a
\nnumber of leaders who are also in town.<\/p>\n
Later yesterday, Soeharto was scheduled to meet with Ave Sven
\nBruun, a leader of the Danish cooperative movement, and Algerian
\npresident Liamine Zeroual.<\/p>\n
Today, his schedule includes meetings with Philippine
\npresident Fidel Ramos, Polish president Lech Walesa, Madagascar's
\nprime minister Francique Ravony and Bangladeshi prime minister
\nBegum Khaleda Zia. He will also take part in a mini-summit of
\nleaders of the world's nine most populous countries to discuss
\nthe program of \"education for all\".<\/p>\n
Also on his schedule during his stay in Copenhagen
\nare meetings with Chinese prime minister Li Peng and Turkish
\npresident Suleiman Demirel. Soeharto and his entourage will leave
\nfor Zagreb on Sunday before making a brief visit to Sarajevo on
