        "content": "<p>Soeharto arrives for APEC summit<\/p>\n<p>VANCOUVER, Canada (JP): President Soeharto arrived here on a<br>\ncold, wet evening Sunday, among the last of the 18 leaders to<br>\narrive for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto and his entourage, which included Minister of Foreign<br>\nAli Alatas and Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono, touched down<br>\nat 11 p.m. local time. They were met by Vancouver Mayor Philip<br>\nOwen and Fisheries Minister David Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>Also present was Coordinating Minister for Production and<br>\nDistribution Hartarto who arrived several days earlier to attend<br>\nthe APEC ministerial meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The President was immediately whisked to Hotel Vancouver<br>\nlocated in the heart of the downtown area where he will spend the<br>\nnext two nights.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto was met there by Indonesia's Consul General to<br>\nVancouver Jacky Wahyu. There was little ceremony at the hotel,<br>\nallowing the President to rest after his six-hour flight from<br>\nCancun, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto is on the last leg of his tour which has taken the<br>\n76-year-old President to Namibia and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>There was no sign of demonstrators near Soeharto's hotel,<br>\nwhich is also accommodating Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Sunday morning 5,000 people took to the streets to<br>\nexpress a multitude of concerns which included East Timor's<br>\nintegration into Indonesia and alleged human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>Activists here have promised to hold another large<br>\ndemonstration against APEC leaders today.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto's agenda over the next two days is full.<\/p>\n<p>Monday (today Indonesian time) he will hold bilateral talks<br>\nwith Australian Prime Minister John Howard, New Zealand Prime<br>\nMinister Jim Bolger, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and<br>\nUnited States President Bill Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto is also due to have lunch with other leaders of the<br>\nAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), before attending<br>\nthe official APEC proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday (tomorrow Indonesian time) Soeharto and the other<br>\nleaders will attend the APEC retreat at the Museum of<br>\nAnthropology at the University of British Columbia.
