Soeharto and his KKN practices<\/p>\n

A number of mass media publications reported on their front
\npages on April 12, 2000 a suggestion that the Attorney General's
\nOffice should display greater seriousness in handling corruption,
\ncollusion and nepotism (KKN) allegedly committed by former
\npresident Soeharto and his children. The majority of Indonesia's
\n200 million plus people, including me, fully agree with this
\nsuggestion. I myself have even prayed to God the Almighty that
\nour laws can be really enforced without discrimination.<\/p>\n
Didn't our former president, in his peak days, often stress
\nthe supremacy of the law and state that the right ones would be
\nright. In view of this, the majority of the population, most of
\nwhom are suffering from the monetary crisis, unemployment and are
\nvictimized by political games as a result of intensified KKN
\nactivities during the administration of Soeharto, fully agree to
\nthe idea of the Attorney General's Office prosecuting him, as
\nsuggested by a member of Commission II of the House of
\nRepresentatives, Handjojo Putro. He has asked the attorney
\ngeneral not to lose his head over this matter.<\/p>\n
Every time he is subjected to interrogation, the New Order
\nruler encounters a sudden deterioration in his health. \"We have
\nour suspicions why he suddenly becomes ill. Therefore, I have
\nsuggested to Marzuki Darusman (the Attorney General) that he
\nshould take Soeharto to his office and interrogate him there,\"
\nsaid Handjojo Putro as quoted by the media. Meanwhile, Herman
\nWidyanada, former member of the Special Committee on
\nInvestigation into the Bank Bali Case, was quoted as suggesting
\nthat before nabbing Soeharto, his children should first be
\nhandled. Of course, we all support this idea.<\/p>\n
A similar idea was also voiced by Adnan Buyung Nasution and
\nFrans Hendra Winata, both lawyers, and a House member from the
\nGolkar faction, Yahya Zaini. They suggested that the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office should change its strategy in dealing with
\nSoeharto by concentrating first on his children, although they
\nalso maintained that the case of former president Soeharto must
\ncontinue to be processed (Suara Karya, April 12, 2000). According
\nto Yahya Zaini, it would be easier to take Soeharto's children,
\nrelatives and cronies to court, rather than doing this to
\nSoeharto himself. When Bob Hasan, a close friend of Soeharto's,
\nis interrogated, information will be obtained about the
\ninvolvement of Soeharto's children, relatives and cronies in KKN
\ncases.<\/p>\n
Once again, we, the people, support this idea. But it should
\nbe born in mind that when the verdict is passed, President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid should not hastily pardon him. It must be
\nremembered that they have accumulated their riches through KKN
\npractices which have caused misery to the majority of the
\nIndonesian people.<\/p>\n
