'Social inequality should be contained'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Defense and Security Edi Sudradjat
\nsaid yesterday that social inequality should be contained to \"a
\ntolerable limit\" so that it does not cause unrest.<\/p>\n
In a written speech delivered by the minister's secretary-
\ngeneral Sugeng Subroto at a ceremony marking the end of an
\nInstitute of National Resilience (Lemhannas) short course, Edi
\nSudradjat said that it was impossible to eliminate social
\ninequality because people's abilities and opportunities differed.<\/p>\n
\"But we have to contain inequality to a tolerable limit. We
\ndon't want to see inequality grow into unrest,\" the minister
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Strong people should be more tolerant and avoid exclusivism,
\nwhile the feeble should control their emotions in order not to be
\ntrapped by frustration which will only cause more trouble,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Institute of National Resilience is a military think tank.<\/p>\n
The Institute's vice governor Juwono Sudarsono seconded Edi's
\nstatement. \"As long as there is inequality, there will be
\nviolence. Hungry people tend to be violent. Our task now is to
\nnourish the hungry people,\" said the former dean of the
\nUniversity of Indonesia's School of Social and Political
\nSciences.<\/p>\n
Edi suggested the Institute's graduates use ethics and
\nmorality as their guide to wade through the negative side-effects
\nof national development.<\/p>\n
\"Sometimes moral values are ignored in our progress. Morality
\nshould be the mainstay of our development,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Edi's statement also said the concept of \"national stability\"
\nshould not be restricted to security. The country needs a type of
\nstability which accommodates change.<\/p>\n
Change, however, should not take place in \"the basic national
\n(political) system\" because this would create chaos, he said.<\/p>\n
Juwono agreed, saying changes could be made without
\ndismantling the whole system.<\/p>\n
The short course was the sixth of its kind held by the
\ninstitute. Its participants were mostly high-ranking military
\nofficers. Non-military participants were from government offices.<\/p>\n
Awards for the best students at this year's course went to
\nMaj. Gen. A.M. Hendropriyono and Lutfi Ibrahim from the office of
\nthe State Minister of Agrarian Affairs. Hendropriyono is the
\nchief of the Armed Forces (ABRI) Education and Training Center.
\nIn 1994, he was the head of the Jakarta regional military
