'Social ills caused by arrogance'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Speaker of the House of Representatives Wahono
\nhas said that Indonesia's present social ills are the products of
\nthe arrogance of power, the habit of certain people of flaunting
\ntheir wealth and the widening social gap.<\/p>\n
To overcome the problem, the authorities -- both military and
\ncivilian -- should improve their sensitivity and vision in
\nrelation to the people's problems, he said yesterday, as quoted
\nby Antara.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a ceremony at his office to install new members of
\nthe House and the People's Consultative Assembly, Wahono called
\non both the government and the people to pay serious attention to
\nthis particular growing pain of the nation, saying it has shown a
\ntendency to get worse.<\/p>\n
Under the Indonesian system, House members are automatically
\nmembers of the Assembly.<\/p>\n
\"We have to be brave enough to see the living reality in our
\nsociety. There are deepening symptoms of dissatisfaction,
\nrestlessness, which have been manifested in the form of brawls
\nand brutality,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He also appealed to legislators to show greater political
\nmaturity, conduct soul searching and to live modest lives so as
\nto set an example for the people.<\/p>\n
\"This is badly needed because the people's aspirations are
\nmounting,\" he said<\/p>\n
Wahono said that the House regards the government as its
\ndialog partner and that, he hoped, the executive held a
\nreciprocal attitude towards the legislature.<\/p>\n
The new legislators consist of four members of the Golkar
\nfaction, one from the Indonesian Democratic Party and two from
\nthe Armed Forces (ABRI).<\/p>\n
The new Assembly members consist of three representatives from
\nthe provinces, two from Golkar and two from ABRI. They replace
\nrepresentatives who have died or have been withdrawn by their
