Soccer security tightened<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java (JP): Security will be tightened in places
\nalong the way to Indonesian soccer league venues in Jakarta to
\nprevent vandalism by hooligan supporters.<\/p>\n
East Java's military commander, Maj. Gen. Iman Utomo, said
\nsecurity personnel would be deployed to keep an eye on supporters
\ngoing to watch their teams play.<\/p>\n
The semifinals and final will be July 25 and July 27 at the
\nSenayan stadium.<\/p>\n
East Java soccer teams Persebaya and Mitra Surabaya will take
\non PSM Ujung Pandang and Bandung Raya in the 3rd Liga Kansas
\nchampionship.<\/p>\n
As in other years, there are fears hooligans will disrupt
\nrailway stations on the way to the Senayan stadium. Last year
\nsome of them looted shops.<\/p>\n
\"Identified hooligans will probably be accompanied by security
\nofficials or barred from leaving their home town if necessary,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The semifinal and final will involve a South Korean referee
\nand seven local referees.<\/p>\n
An All Indonesia Football Federation official defended the use
\nof the South Korean referee, saying the decision was made to make
\nthe competition credible.<\/p>\n
\"Local spectators prefer a soccer competition to be
\nadjudicated by a foreign referee to make the game fair,\" said
\nDjafar Umar, who chairs the federation's referee commission.<\/p>\n
The commission had decided to use a foreign referee for the
\ncompetition without underestimating the local referees' ability,
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He said local supporters seemed more accepting of foreign
