Sniffer dog helps catch watch thief<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): With the help of a police sniffer dog,
\ndetectives arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly stealing
\nwristwatches worth about Rp 2.5 million (US$666) from a Matahari
\ndepartment store yesterday.<\/p>\n
The dog traced the suspect, Tedy Suryanta, back to his house
\nin Johar Baru, Central Jakarta, several kilometers away from the
\nstore at Mega Mal Pluit in North Jakarta, City Police Spokesman
\nLt. Col. E. Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
The man allegedly stole seven Guess watches on Tuesday night
\nafter breaking into the store as it closed and smashing a display
\ncounter.<\/p>\n
"The store's management was at first uncertain about the
\nidentity of the culprit," he said.<\/p>\n
"Police officer who arrived at the crime scene dusted the
\nfingerprints left on the counter and then used the dog to help
\ntrace the suspect."<\/p>\n
The case was reported about 9 p.m. Tuesday to the Penjaringan
\nPolice subprecinct, which then called for backup from City Police
\nHeadquarters.<\/p>\n
Based on the management's suspicion of Tedy, who was an
\nemployee of a store in the same building, police decided to visit
\nhis house on Jl. Rawa Tengah in Johar Baru early yesterday.<\/p>\n
Initially, Tedy denied all the allegations made against him,
\neven though police allegedly knew that his fingerprints matched
\nthose left on the counter, Aritonang said. And the dog
\n"confirmed" that the scents at the crime scene and the man's
\nhouse were the same.<\/p>\n
He said the suspect argued that he had never visited Matahari
\nthat day.<\/p>\n
Tedy allegedly admitted his wrongdoing about 3 a.m. after
\nofficers located the stolen watches, which were hidden at the
\nhouse and his workplace, he said.<\/p>\n
"Tedy confessed that he came in the store just before it
\nclosed. He went straight to the Guess counter which was already
\nunmanned as the shop assistants had left. He smashed the counter,
\ntook the watches and left the store."<\/p>\n
Police believe that Tedy observed the store's operations
\nbefore the theft and later planned to sell the watches.<\/p>\n
